We had a lot of fun finding our "magic spots" today. We wrote nature poetry in our special spots. Here is an example of one of them:

We have been exploring how rivers move, how people can make river banks stronger and where it's safe to build homes near rivers. We've been making observations about where the river goes and how fast and slow water effect the river in different ways. We've worked in groups to plan how to make river banks stronger and decided what materials to use.
Fun fact -- the River Table sand is made from recycled lunch trays! -Cayden The third graders ventured out into the woods this morning! Twenty-seven students and two teachers traipsed through the recess field, breached the crest of the hill then carefully slid down the slippery slope that leads into the 17 acres of woods we have at HES. There were lots of smiling faces and laughter as the kids figured out how to maneuver in their snowshoes. Next time we head out we'll be building Quinzee's which are a type of igloo.
We earned our 20 stars! 3M voted to read all day and wear pajamas to school for their celebration. It makes me happy to hear that our class loves to read so much! I decided it would be even better if students could bring in blankets and pillows to make themselves nice and cozy! As you can see in the pictures below - friends gathered together to read next to each other.
The third graders explored simple machines! Each 3rd grader was asked to choose one of the 6 simple machines we learned about (inclined plane, wheel and axel, pulley, lever, wedge and screw) and come up with a plan on how to build one with their group members. Many of the groups chose to create marble runs. Others created pulleys for flag poles and wells. What a creative class we have! We had so much fun this morning doing these exercises. They helped us get out some of our Friday energy so that we could focus on our science work.
-Kaitie and Tess We have been studying animals for our animal adaptation research. We have been researching how animals use their adaptations to survive. We have been focusing on what adaptations animals have that help them eat. For example, squirrels use their strong teeth to break open nuts to eat. We've also been looking at how animals use their adaptations to help protect themselves from their enemies/predators -- some animals use camouflage to hide and others have bright colors to warn predators that they are poisonous. The last thing that we were researching was the animals habitat and range and what adaptations they have to help them survive in their environment. For example, some animals grow fur or hibernate to survive the winters. We've been using a graphic organizer to help us organize our information. -Connor and Cam |
